I think I found out why this plant grows until it uproots itself and dies. It’s because of humans.
Its stalk looks like a giant asparagus. I know this, because I have eaten asparagus.

Because we landscape, we change the natural state of this desert wonder. Here is an example of it not suicidal:
See the difference? It’s not alone. It is held up by the network of it’s family.
It may look messy, but it’s quite beautiful.
